From Sarn Helen. Small parking spot by ruins at 273661; 350787. Down road to fp at Tan y Bwlch then up through felled trees to open hillside & a superb view.
From here followed quad bike track pretty much all the way to the 600m contours & then easily to top of Penamnen. A superb viewpoint. Continued to Foel Fras & Y Ro Wen. With Dan. | stig_nest | 10/02/2024 |
12.65 miles 2937ft walk ,start at A470 Blaenau Ffestiniog layby to Moel Farwyd, Moel Penamnen, Foel Fras and Manod Mawr. | stephenbuda | 05/07/2023 |
Walked up from Blaenau, bit exciting using the quarry track to get to the top to the next one. The walk over to Penamnen is quiet boggy, but the old slate buildings are impressive. I didn't trust the footpath back down to BF would avoid the active quarry below so got a little lost on the tracks going down, but used arial view to find my way down. | andrewroberts | 26/06/2023 |
Blaenau Ffestiniog - Moel Penamnen - Foel-fras - Manod Mawr North Top - Blaenau Ffestiniog. Parked near the top of Lord Street. | Mark Jackson | 25/11/2022 |
Followed Nuttalls route 5.4. From the station car park in Blaenau up through the car park opposite up a path out the back of the car park, turn left follow the road up to a gate, through the gate then up to where there were some marker posts. Up through a vegetated area to the top then a short path through the scree to the ridge. Follow the path up to a stile by a gate onto the open access land, straight up to Moel Penamnen. From Moel Penamnen along the ridge to Foel-Fras then follow the fence all the way to Manod Mawr North Top. Then onto Manod Mawr(see detail on Manod Mawr), back to Blaenau. 9.2 mile circuit 2,380ft climbing. | JulieB | 03/10/2022 |
Parked up in the long stay car park in the town, nice walk up through the quarry, from the top, keep heading north through the boggy march area to the top. | Buckleymon | 05/09/2022 |
From Crimea Pass layby straight up to Moel Farlwyd and along to Moel Penamnen and Foel Fras and back. Low cloud and steady rain for the whole trip. Others went to zip world as a drier option. Did wild camp at the old dam below a few years ago - couldn't see up then or down now. | richard69 | 06/06/2022 |

From Bethania, a round of Manod Mawr, Manod Mawr North top and Moel Penamnen. All straightforward, was told by truck driver I should not be on the quarry track approaching last top but he was OK about it. Need to follow it for about 500 metres really to get to decent ground for ascent. Descent down steeply to south and on to quarry tracks to LLechwed quarry and the road. | dickscroop | 11/01/2022 |
Moel Penamnen, Manod Mawr North Top, Manod Mawr. V diff in fog, navigating through the quarry. Follow the obvious quarry roads at the beginning, rhododendrons are impossible | Chris Williams | 03/09/2021 |
Looked easy on the map :/ bagged as a single hill, way up was fine, and the summit itself and the views were excellent, particularly to the west. The way down was fairly contrived, and pathless. | simocity | 09/08/2021 |

A splendid walk along a mainly grassy ridge from the car park at Crimea Pass on a very warm September day, visiting Moel Farlwyd, Moel Penamnen, Foel-fras and Y Ro Wen. Then return along the ridge, cutting below the summits on the south side to the Crimea Pass. Followed by a quick up and down of Moel Dyrnogydd. 18.5km with 810m ascent in 6 hours. From Crimea Pass. Moel Farlwyd, Moel Penamnen, Foel-fras, returned below Moel Penamnen (under the crags) then across A470 to climb Moel Dyrnogydd. Nice day with excellent views | RobertP | 06/09/2020 |
Moel Farlwyd, Moel Penamnem & Foel Fras from Crimea Pass with Rufus. 7am start, took a few minutes to find the stile, I won’t give any more details to save you some fun! Out and back basically following the NP boundary on the OS map, cutting across a fence and gully above Llynau Barlwyd and traversing under the summit of Moel Penamnem on the return. Better terrain than I expected and a fast round trip of just under 2 hours. | jacobrichmond | 31/08/2020 |

What is it about destroyed trig points in this area? Never seen just the foundation remaining before and this is the 2nd today after Manod Mawr. Summit appears to be grassy area just off to the north. | mntainman | 11/10/2016 |
Continuation of walk from Moel Farlwyd. Steep descent and ascent but no problems. Great views. With JT. | Sprog | 09/10/2016 |
Nuttalls walk - very boggy and hard going. From this top to Foel-fras there is a decent path | johnjennison | 02/10/2016 |
From Moel Farlwyd. My favourite bit was the peaceful bwlch/llyn but the dark cloud and late afternoon sun over Allt Fawr gave the walk some atmosphere. Last hill of four day trip. Paused on the descent to drink in the beauty nature and give thanks. | Wycombe Wanderer | 17/09/2016 |

weather was awful | Darren-443 | 20/02/2016 |
Solo. Wet and Windy. Too Windy to stand upright on the summit. Worse weather was forecasted from midday so I knew I was not going to make all the days targets. Left with the wind behind me for Foel Fras. | Aimless Rambler | 28/01/2016 |
Nuttall walk 5.4, solo on a dry bright day. | Lou | 07/09/2014 |
Aimed to also do Manod Mawr, but rain set in hard and we looked at slate quarries instead. | skeletonjo | 27/06/2014 |
From Blaenau Ffestiniog, a round of Manod Bach, Manod Mawr, NT, Foel-fras, Moel Penamnen, Moel Farlwyd and Moel Dyrnogydd. | rhalstead | 21/03/2014 |
Done on a walk from Dolwyddelan to Blaenau. Was really looking forward to this as it's often caught my eye and looks very graceful from Tanygrisiau lake. Annoyingly, the cloud came and a heavy hail storm hit, so I beat a quick descent to Llannau Barlwyd. | Jake994 | 02/01/2014 |
