Whilst it was extremely grim underfoot, this would turn out to be the most pleasant hill of the day. First Nuttall of five today.simocity11/02/2024
From the free parking area at Hartside cross to the North to reach the Nuttall summits of Fiends fell, Melmerby fell and the Dewey top of Cuns fell(my last English Dewey), a Seven and Three quarter mile walk returning by the same route as the Aglionby beck which the Maiden way cross's would have been in spate.WAYNE ROWLETT11/12/2023
Nuttalls route: from A686 at Hartside Cross via Maiden Way- Melmerby Fell and Fiends Fell. Extremely hot day- hottest of the year according to Met Office. Lots of shooters out on the fells. Poor grouse.Lazylizzie09/09/2023
From Hartside Pass - with GWJohnIvor17/05/2023
Parked at Hartside Summit. It was cold with heavy snow showers. Cloud base above summits but below in the showers. About an inch of snow on the summit. Relatively easy but quite boggy walk over Fiends Fell and Knapside Hill and on to summit cairn and nearby stone marking summit. Did get views of a very snowy Lake District. Time taken 2 hours for 5.8 miles and just 700 feet of ascent.isabelle12/04/2023
Renwick to Thack Fell then Watch hill, Black Fell, Hartside Height, Hartside Cross, Fiends Fell and descent to Renwick via Twotop Hill & Fellgate. A dry cold day with hill fog & moor ground frozen.Vin07/02/2023

My final peak of the day. I had started at Cold Fell and having ticked off Fiend's Fell, I camped just below the summit out of the wind. A long but very satisfying day.morgs4mountains22/03/2022

11.2 mile circular from Gamblesby, walked along road to Melmerby then along dead end road SE picking up path through woods up to Meikle Awfell, from there an annoying descent followed by trails fording 2 little streams along the access land boundary until the col between Cuns Fell and Caterpallot Hill, climbed over wonky gate into private land up to the summit of Caterpallot Hill, returned back to col and then a long ascent up to Cuns Fell's rocky summit, then followed ATV tracks onto Melmerby Fell, from summit an easy, not particularly boggy trail takes you all the way to Fiend's Fell, from the trig we descended NW across easy ground joining the byway and following it easily back to Gamblesby. The day started cloudy and showery but all cloud cleared when we got onto the higher tops, only saw 3 offroad bikers on the byway at the end, no one else, nice views into the Lakes, Scotland and towards The Cheviot.DanTrig02/08/2020

From the ruined Hartside cafe. What a shame it has not been rebuilt! Up by the grouse butts on the way out. Back more direct via the stone man. Head to back corner of car park to find start of both trails. Chilly! With B and R.jenx28/09/2019
An early evening walk from the former Hartside café, over Fiend's Fell, Little Knapside Hill and Knapside Hill, whose shelter cairn had been a sighting mark from the start, to the little row of candidate summit cairns North of the main cairn on Melmerby Fell. The setting sun was my companion on the walk back.Nick Down128/03/2019
From remains of cafe walked down bridleway for about 300 metres to plank giving access to small path which leads through gate to large cairn. Then 4wd track all the way to the summit.Dry underfoot on glorious hot sunny day. With Oscar.catman26/02/2019

Solo. Done twice on there and back to Cross Fell from Hartside Cafe.Aimless Rambler26/05/2015
To the north west of Melmerby Fell lay Knapside Hill and a clear track, so I decided that this would be the better return route and would avoid a second wade. The snow was intermittent on the ridge and this was the easiest walking of the day. The only obstacle came where the ground dipped sharply before rising again to Fiends Fell, and I had to pick my way carefully round the east of the hollow to avoid sinking into snow.peter4lc25/02/2015
Parked at Hartside Cross on the A686 Penrith to Alston road south on course of Old Tramway to area of old mines where the tramway ends at a river valley Aglionby Beck. Then followed a line past mine workings to the top of Melmerby Fell 709m marked as Dun Edge. Headed NW across nice grassy top to Knapside Hill and ate lunch in the shelter of the large cairn. Then north to Little Knapside Hill and Fiends Fell. 634m and down to the pass. Continued tstraight across to Black Fell as we had plenty of time. Snowed briefly when we got back to the car.axe.stephen16/02/2015
