Parked on the side of the road at Snake Pass. Followed PW to Bleaklow Head and then wandered over several peat hags in the clag, which all seemed to be of similar heights. Cloud began to lift after Wain Stones and Hern Stones on the way to Higher Shelf Stones, such that the Kinder plateau could be seen. Pleasant path along the top of Crooked Clough back. Blustery with showers/overcast. Solo. Original plan was to approach from the north but all the laybys on the A628 had been temporarily closed. | richard69 | 12/07/2023 |
Up a closed Snake Pass from Glossop, then along Pennine Way, with small detour to summit. Back via Woodhead. | burwellian | 23/05/2023 |
from snake pass higher shelf stones > b29 site > bleaklow head (small cairn) > bleaklow hill > bleaklow stones (anvil stone) return on high ground and hern clough snake pass > featherbed top return to pass good snow day | underhill | 20/01/2023 |
Short walk from the higher shelf stones across the boggy moorland, from here I followed the Pennie way path back to the car. Overall a lovely walk taking about 2.5 hrs. | Buckleymon | 14/11/2022 |
Northwards along Pennine Way from Snake Pass to Bleaklow Head with return via B-29 crash site and Higher Shelf Stones. | RobB | 06/09/2022 |
Parked on Snake Pass and took Devil's Dyke up the mountain and went back via the B-29 crash site. Poured with rain, I was soaked to the skin but luckily a warm day. | SootAndShale | 24/07/2022 |

From Old Glossop. Rather than the Nuttals route I chose the path that skirts the edge of Dowstone Clough, which gave excellent views. Route included the crash site and Higher Shelf Stones, and return down James’ Thorn and Shelf Benches. 14km and pretty good underfoot | Rockdoctor | 18/04/2022 |
On Pennine Way. Visited summit and large cairn. | PGCE | 06/04/2022 |

Started at Birchen Clough Bridge and followed the Lady Clouch Woods to Doctor's Gate Culvert on the Snake Pass and ascended via Old Woman and then turning right on the Pennine Way to Hern Clough and then on to Bleaklow Head. B-29 wreck site photographed and then across Bleaklow Hill, south over Westend Head, West over the Ridge and then south over Alport Moor and into Birchin Clough. | lindslow | 11/08/2021 |
Started at Snake Pass. It was sunny and cool perfect walking weather. This was primarily a revisit to Bleaklow. Last time I was here was nearly 30 years ago on a wet and windy day with zero visibility. I remember spending ages trying to find the summit and being uncertain hence the revisit. Today was a simple walk along the Pennine Way to Bleaklow. On route I saw plenty of Red Grouse, Meadow Pipits and Ravens. As I arrived at the large cairn I saw Golden Plovers and a beautiful Short Eared Owl. I must have got lucky as with the early start I was on my own. I visited the large cairn and found the tiny cairn marking the true summit. I visited the neighbouring vegetated peat hag as well. Great views to Manchester and north to the South Pennines and Yorkshire Dales. On the way back I went via Higher Shelf Stones where I saw a few lone walkers. There were lots of Wheatears and Meadow Pipits in the rocks. I headed back to the Pennine Way via the crashed Superfortress. When I got back to the | isabelle | 03/08/2021 |
Bleaklow Head and Higher Shelf Stones from Old Glossop (Nuttalls route) | Gary Heath | 02/08/2021 |
Walking the first section of the Pennine Way from Edale to Hadfield with detours for hill tops and trig points. Scorching hot day and got rather burnt. Finally made it up to Bleaklow feeling done in by the weather, then downhill all the way and along the river to pick up the car in Hadfield, conserving water for the last part. Great set of hills and cracking walk but too hot. | MysteriousSue | 15/07/2021 |
Second peak of my 3 Peak challenge. 35km bagging Black Hill, Bleaklow and Kinder | dazedemon | 10/07/2021 |
From lay-by W of Alport Bridge on A57. The Tower, Alport Moor, Bleaklow Head and Higher Shelf Stones included before roughly following road back using permissive paths and footpaths. Good walking, even the parts tracing the road. | welshyboyo | 04/07/2021 |
Parked at Birchin Bridge Car Park and bivvy'd at alport castle. Followed ridge round past the trig and on to alport moor, then up to bleaklow stones, on to Bleaklow Head and High Shelf stones to admire the crash site. Headed over to overwood moss before descending back to the car 25km 5.5 hrs excluding the sleep! | Nicky C | 16/06/2021 |

After Higher Shelf Stones. A very underwhelming patch of generic moorland | sturuss | 12/12/2020 |
Ascended from Torside carpark via the Pennine Way. Visited cairn with pole and true summit marked by small cairn on a peat hag. Returned via Near Black Clough and the Longdendale Trail. A fantastic day in the hills. Great weather and views, with quite a lot of frost and ice (although sadly not all the peat bogs were frozen!). | alistairpooler | 01/12/2020 |
parked near factory in Old Glossop - up via Yellowslacks, down Doctor's Gate (path in very poor condition) then up to bwf on Shire Hill | andy63 | 12/11/2020 |
19 miles from kinder Reservoir on the Pennine Way | stephenbuda | 17/10/2020 |
10.5 mile walk from Woodhead car park, followed boggy path along Near Black Clough, then when the path disappears we managed to walk straight onto the summit somehow across the maze of wilderness, from summit descended to Pennine Way then along Trans Pennine Trail back to the car. Quite a lot of people about in these cold but clear conditions with amazing views, you could see the North Yorkshire Moors as well as Pen-y-Ghent, Ingleborough and Pendle Hill and the Forest of Bowland across the South Pennines, Manchester close by and the skyline of Liverpool, the Clwydians, Berwyns and Snowdonia and even Shropshire's Breidden Hills. Our 9th ascent. | DanTrig | 11/10/2020 |

Bleaklow walk from Snake Pass | jmistry86 | 15/02/2019 |
Followed Route 13.1 from Nuttall's book. Started at Old Glossop, path past Blakemoor Plantation and joined the Penine Way at Clough Edge (there's no clear route on the very last bit after the grouse butts and I had to scramble through the heather a little). Great cloud inversion here, rest of day was misty with no views. Didn't fall for the trick of assuming the Bleaklow peak was the one with the pile of stones with the wooden post, it's the hump next to it with one tiny stone on top. Route to Higher Shelf Stones was surprisingly unboggy. Loved the graffiti. Doctor's gate back to start. | tsharp | 11/01/2019 |
From layby on Snake Pass following the Pennine Way on way out. Returned via Higher Shelf Stones. Frosty but barely icy ground made the walk a lot easier than if was just the mud underneath. | muzza2 | 09/01/2019 |
