Track up yard sike visited all 3 areas. | robertphillips | 24/11/2023 |
Boo and I. Almost an afterthought for the afternoon. Tried it a few times from different angles but achieved it today | Alphaville199 | 29/10/2023 |
I parked on the minor road south of the A66 then used the track up Yard Sike. I failed to find any helpful tracks up to the summit but it hardly mattered, all easy grass. Excellent viewpoint, just a shame about the traffic noise | Colin Crawford | 27/07/2023 |
parked in layby at 872129, up road to underpass and followed bw east to meet bw heading north west along old roman road to agate at the side of the track that allows access to some rough pasture, across this to gravel track not shown on map which runs from 867134 via shooting hut to quarry at 876144. From there easy grassy path to summit and wooden hurdle over to trig. Back same way. | Flatfield | 09/07/2023 |
Great Knipe & Iron Band from Banks Gate. 11 miles | Gary Heath | 11/06/2023 |
As others, parked at S end of A66 underpass (NY873128). No waymarkers at N end of underpass contoured hillside, then along linear corridor through first gate in wall and onto Yard Sike to shooting huts and then a turn W to a quarry. Along N side of wall to high point. For trig, there are a couple of places to access through gates, good views. | matty1971b | 19/02/2023 |
Parked just S of A66, on minor road E of Palliard. Crossed A66 on foot and followed track towards Yard Sike. A solid ATV track branches left to cross Yard Sike and takes a fairly direct line towards the summit. Visited trig, summit and middle summit. | PGCE | 24/01/2023 |
4/5 Dewey Day: Great Knipe from the underpass on the A66, along the BW and moorland to Yard Sike, crossed it and up steep grassy slope. Over BWF at the top and short walk to the trig. 4.7km with 200m ascent in 1h 20m. | silveracorn_alan | 22/10/2022 |
Parking beside BW finger post at S end of A66 underpass (NY873128). No waymarkers at N end of underpass - through BWF gate on L, contoured hillside, then along linear corridor between BWFs - open at W end, over gate to side of A66 for 20m W. Then padlocked gate to sheep pens and another gate to vehicular track up E side of Yard Sike to shooting huts and then a turn W to a quarry. Along N side of wall to high point. For trig, there is a hurdle in the wall about 25m from the trig. | Isbjorn | 21/08/2022 |
Parked on the aforementioned bend and then carefully crossed the very busy A66. Met the charming gamekeeper who was repairing the track. Goodness knows why as it could claim to have a better surface than the M6. Fine summit but today no sound of birds, only traffic below. | Campbell Singer | 10/08/2021 |
Like others used the underpass, parking on the bend on the minor road south of the Bridle Path, then easy walk up with the bridle path then made B line for the hill, but walked down a different way using the high wall and the nice graded shooting lodge track. What a cracking hill for lovely moorland birds (Curlew, Oyster Catcher and Plover all in full cry) and lovely views to the Lakes in early evening. I enjoyed this hill a lot. | nickywood1 | 26/06/2021 |
Very easy access from minor road on other side of dual carriageway directly south. Visited both summits. Easterly one looks higher and high point is on north side of wall accessed view gate to east. | conanharrod | 24/05/2021 |
From junction of minor road and A66 due south of summit. Short section of track over private land to reach access land. Met farmer there who was very friendly even though I had just climbed his locked gate. Up Yard Sike just before the little outcrop and over a ford - easily crossed. Due north to a barbed wire fence then contour round the stream and to the top. Bull by the gate to the private land at the bottom upon my return. Very docile. | ijpowell | 29/08/2020 |
Parked on the other side of the A66 near the underpass at 87327 12799, once I had crossed under the road I headed up to Bridle way that leads North west to a gate then a short plod over to the track that runs adjacent to Yard sike, at the gate follow the track left (not on the map) to a small quarry like thing and continue along the wall don't worry about being on the wrong side of the wall as there is a wooden gate adjacent to the trig. Returned the same way, Four and half miles in Two hours. | WAYNE ROWLETT | 25/07/2020 |
From Layby on lane at NY 871 129 then through tunnel under A66 at NY874 128.Followed wall to a right turn then up to fence on other side. Climbed carefully over wall and followed fence to wooden huts at bridge then track to old quarry then to summit. Returned by track to A66. | dgresty | 20/03/2020 |
From Bank's Gate. Took the track NE, then ATV track east below the fell, them ascended steeply to the summit. Returned the same way. With AT. | Man of Kernow1 | 08/02/2020 |
Fairly straightforward from Stainmore Café. | Wycombe Wanderer | 08/01/2020 |
Parked near bridge near Clatteringdike Nook to south. | Slash3 | 02/08/2019 |

From Slapestone Bridge following the Smeltmill Beck to NY 8555 1503, whence a fairly direct route to the top. Some very boggy ground, rendered mostly firm by recent low temperatures. | jonglew | 16/12/2018 |
Parked at road off A66 at Slapstone Bridge, and walked up track alongside Smeltmill Beck, then followed suggested route from info boards. Extremely enjoyable - route very passable with only few boggy sections. | SidKnee77 | 14/10/2018 |
With Jo, from Slapestone Bridge: up track past Smeltmill Beck, and then, with minor variations, followed MOD preferred route. Weather; sunny, warm, good visibility. | amblerbob | 22/06/2018 |
From minor road south of A66. No option but to climb barbed fence that goes directly up the hill as no gate or stile. Otherwise easy. | ijpowell | 22/06/2018 |
From Slapestone Bridge,mostly on route suggested by M.O.D.With Oscar. | catman | 23/05/2018 |

Parked on the verge of the minor road near its junction with the A66 at 867133 (Space for a couple of cars) Up recently extended shooting track to small quarry at 873144 ATV track alongside wall for about ½km to the summit. (PM) | gerrybowes | 04/04/2017 |
Parked at the road junction with the A66 - 867134. A 90 minute walk of 4 miles with GB via the track which leads to the higher quarry. | bolton | 04/04/2017 |
Solo. Parked off the eastbound A66 at Banks Gate. Very wide road with plenty of parking space and no traffic. Army Access Land with track up hillside and way marked posts showing the driest way up to the summit! Even dogs welcome!! A really pleasant route and great summit views. Both the middle top and east tops are easily found on the north side of the wall. | Dangerous Dave | 02/04/2017 |
Started at Banks Gate. Great Knipe then via an underpass below A66 to Moudy Mea. | ger | 30/05/2016 |
Repeat of previous ascent but this time included middle top. trig and stone! Two JCB and three earthmovers were extending the track up to close to the old summit - be able to cycle it next year. | SS | 24/04/2016 |
Parked at gate where the track starts to the s on the A66. Follwed this till in line with hill and headed straight for top. Did the other two tops in case the tamperers 1.5cm is wrong.(lol) | DARRENG | 14/10/2015 |
Along the estate track from A66 for c500m, to level with sheepfold, then direct line to the summit. Would be unpleasant after a lot of rain, but pretty much dry today. Probably the best of my five tops today. | Crib Goch | 03/10/2015 |
A walk taking in Mouldy Mea, High Greygrits and Great Knipe. Hard moorland walking with one or two short steep bits. Parked at NY 87423 12792. Crossed the stream by a bridge and followed the old railway to a hut. Up onto moor to Moudy Mea from here. Next stop High Greygrits and trig. Near the trig picked up a track and followed to just past a ford, then turned left onto moor to Roman signal station. Next was A66, really exciting to get across and wall at the other side was quite smooth. Back to moorland to Great Knipe. Down to road and back to car. Lots of barbed wire around. | MikeM | 06/09/2015 |
Parked on minor road verge south of A66 at the Kaber turnoff, crossed the A66 and followed the track opposite to the ridge and a shooting hut, thereafter following a rough track left to the summit. Gate at start unlocked but subsequently locked on our return by the farmer who ignored a small trespass by us at the start! | Fisky Boy | 02/05/2015 |

Teach me to check the updates! Up and down the track to the old top from the main road in hill fog. Sadly on entering log, discovered the summit moved to near the trig point in 2012 so I'll need to return and get a view. | SS | 15/11/2014 |
Parking on the verge at the junction with the A66 and the Barras and South Stainmore road (altitude 1223ft). The area immediately over the A66 is not open access but the gamekeeper was there preparing for a shoot the following day. Let me through and even left the gates unlocked asking me to put the locks on when I returned! He told me to follow the main shooting track to three shooting houses (hidden in a dip so not obvious until you are almost at them). Then, turn left and follow the wall to the summit. Slightly longer, but dry and returned with dry socks! 90 minutes return. | moorsman | 15/10/2014 |
Parked at Slapestones, deserted farm S side of A66. Easy jog across damp fields and up SSW slopes to top. Few walls that can be crossed easily. Good trig. Back same way in 25 mins total. | nordicstar | 04/12/2013 |
Parked on grass verge at bend in minor road at
NY 86947 13138 (380m). Walked back to cross the busy and fast A66. Climbed two gates then track to NY 87265 13802 where we crossed Yard Sike to reach interesting sheepfold. From this point it is a pathless DIY job to summit. | David Gradwell | 29/07/2013 |
Parked on S side of A66 at 873.128. Bit further from here but you start through an underpass that's also a bridleway! Diagonal approach to hill, boggy in parts, passing a most unusual stone sheepfold. Nice summit with trig. Went to other high point too, just in case... | Aye Jimmy | 31/05/2013 |
Parked easily at junction 867 133 south side. Didn't find good route. | destaylor | 04/05/2013 |
start ~ 867132. Easy climb through bog land, thankfully well frozen. Summits by the wall, east of trig point. | steve hudson | 26/02/2013 |

From Leeds 9 x individual quiet, empty, lonely 500m Dewey's around Great Shunner. Some brilliant, some terrible heather, some boggy flatness -all fun. Ending the day at Ellerstring YH to meet Lesley. | Chris Pearson | 17/04/1999 |
