Having read earlier visitor reviews I donned gaiters and thick trousers. However, relatively straightforward if approached from the SE. A metal gate leads onto a trodden path through a short tunnel of thorns onto the open hillside, further trodden routes giving access through the gorse. Once about 50m NE of the Trig the gorse is trodden sufficiently to enable a final short crossing that avoids scratches and swearing. | summitter | 15/01/2023 |
None of the previous logs get close to revealing how bad the gorse and bramble are if you attempt in late summer in shorts. Thought I was going to have to call mountain rescue. Must of lost a pint of blood. | andrew brown | 17/08/2022 |
Used wall to access trig. Felt gorse field to NE was high so painfully entered that too. Gaiters useful. | Adrian | 09/07/2022 |
As others, from Engine Inn to SW. Also visited alternative highpoint in brambles and gorse. | PGCE | 04/07/2022 |
What tumpbagging is all about. Well defended by thick gorse and other vegetation but if you take the fp to the south and follow the pasture around the back to the far wall, climb it which is not that easy and plough through about ten metres of bad stuff, there is a path that takes you to within a short distance of the trig. | clivevilla | 27/06/2022 |
Hadn't read other people's logs and it looked close from Trencrom hill. Shorts not a good idea. | AndyS | 02/09/2021 |
Wall too slippy in wet. To access path (NE of & parallel to wall), and avoid a swamp, cross wall/brambles at SW 50641 37045. Path peters out about 50m from summit. | jimbloomer | 20/01/2019 |
From Engine House pub. Walked S on road to RoW - followed for approx 70m, then a direct route over rough pastures (and a large boulder wall) to SW 5027 3711 where the boulder wall is walked along to the summit to avoid a sea of gorse. Last of 11 hills for the day. | jonglew | 19/10/2018 |
From engine house pub, along ROW and left at gate past wall. Very wet path overtopping boots for about 70m Trig reached and then horrible gorse to negotiate to HP, boulders forming wall were higher. Back down the wall to water tank was a mistake.
Not the most pleasant of hills. | PeterD | 21/09/2018 |
from engine house pub. Follow PROW to just beyond wall(SW50713700) to summit. Pass through gate. Very wet path then faint through bracken, gorse and brambles to freshly painted Trig pillar. Failed Lon this yesterday as was not prepared to get totally soaked from the wet vegetation. today not much better. | cjo | 20/06/2018 |
From pub CP to SW. RoW then on top of the wall forming the boundary between fields and the gorse-filled access land. | mae | 19/03/2018 |
After rejecting a direct route from the ruined engine house car park- too much gorse-, we continued south to the pleasant looking Engine House pub, Cripplesase and found the marked footpath to the south west which contours around the summit. We changed into gaiters and long trousers fearing the worst. We followed the path amongst fields to meet the access land boundary, beyond which was thick gorse! We reached a water tank and wall junction . The wall, which went in a NW/ SE line, was made of massive boulders and rose above the gorse by 2-3m. We figured it was just like an alpine ridge and traversed the angled, rough- surfaced, mainly stable boulders, noting two standing stones to our left and then the trig on the right ( east) - c 18p- side of the wall. The bracken and gorse was only knee high and not too dense here. It was hard to see the ground due to the gorse but we thought the HP might be c 20 p to the W of the wall, accessed through tiny paths within the gorse. We returned the s | Denise | 19/06/2017 |
Unpleasant walk through the gorse for the final part walking up from the pub car park. The return through bog and thorn wasn't much better. | Walker Dan | 18/03/2017 |
From Cripplesease, followed the line of the wall to the SSE. Actually quite a good, if muddy track up the E side of the wall to the trig point. Then you're on your own with the gorse... | victimofmathema | 01/04/2016 |
Walked through the gorse from the car park to the WNW then followed fence back to road which was easier. | Dugswell2 | 06/05/2015 |
Ascend from Trink side as the other side is incredibly gorse heavy | ang.bw | 22/12/2014 |
Best access to N, keeping to the E of the wall.
Also possible to access from SE by keeping on top of wall. All other routes barred by gorse. | PeteF | 28/10/2014 |
Newmill to Whitecross: Worst terrain of the day. From ROW leaving road junction to N, entry into Access area, although stiled, was a serious bramble fight. After c200m progress eases until picking up an unmaped trail winding up to N spur then towards trig. Couldn't locate any trail to SE until lower down - very tricky, tiring & painful gorse/brambles. On summit area, big boulder wall is best pathway. HP investigation - nigh impossible. | Smudge | 04/10/2014 |
One of two hills climbed on a Holiday to Cornwall with Beth. High gorse and shorts not advisable. Managed to get to 12 O'clock rock but not able to find Trig. | Chris920 | 29/07/2014 |
Midsummer's Day, a walk from Cripplesease via the engine house. Getting to the top of the hill proved difficult due to lots of gorse and brambles. Round barrow at the top is very overgrown. Very fine views of Penwith though. | thesweetcheat | 20/06/2014 |
Came here to bag the trig and a couple of geocaches. Quite a prickly hill but the views are worth it. | CornishGazza | 07/10/2012 |
Rough, pathless and prickly nightmare of a hill. Had a battle getting to the top from Balnoon and an equally hideous time getting down the other side to Cripplesease. A decent path would benefit it as it looks so appealing and would make a fine duo with Trencrom. | Jake994 | 11/08/2008 |
